Supplying natural and finished oak beams for:
Fireplace Mantles
Large Inglenooks
Ceiling Beams
Decorative Beams
Below, we will guide you through the process of selectioning your beam/s, by describing the type of oak we use, the sizes available and other important decisions like shape, colour and finish.
If you have any questions please call us.
We supply air dried oak beams.
A freshly sawn oak tree, know as green oak, contains a lot of moisture. This is cut to size and stored for a period of time to allow the timber to dry.
On average a beam takes 1 year to dry 1 inch of timber. Typically, our stocks are between 2 and 5 years air dried.
The timber will have natural splits and shakes appear as the timber dries creating character and strength.
*** Where the timber is used as a fireplace beam or lintel, a naturally air dried piece of oak will be more suitable than a fresh, green piece of oak due to the warm environment it will be in ***
We stock a huge range of sizes ranging from small cross sectional beams to larger 8m (23') timbers depending on your requirements. Stock dimensions range from 150mm, 200mm, 250mm and 300mm square.
We are able to work in both metric and imperial and to enable us to quote you for a beam, we require THREE dimensions of your beam
Height
Width (Depth)
Length.
Should you require a size that is not a stock item, we have the facility to cut ANY beam to size using our Wood-Mizer sawmill
Some tolerance is required on beams to enable us to reduce any possible waste there may be in cutting your beam. However, if critical dimensions are needed, we can provide finer and more detailed cuts using conventional woodworking machinery.
The shaping of your beam is known as 'Adzing' (pronounced - 'add-zing') - We offer a light, medium and heavy adze depending on your requirements.
As the raw material is square, we have the ability to arch sections within a beam to create the perfect inglenook beam. All we need to know are ALL the dimensions. ie the length,. height and width of the beam as well as the start and stop points and degree of curvature needed! If this sounds complicated, just ask a member of staff on 01937 580580 for details.
We normally remove all nails, then sand, treat, colour and wax your beam to your own specifications.
We can only clean beams at our premises at Wetherby. We can offer a collection and delivery service if applicable.
The before and after transformations can be amazing and we always advise you of costs, possible snags and time needed before starting a project
We specialise in removing and treating all forms of decay including dry rot, wet rot, woodworm and death watch beetle. A 'five star' treatment is used to treat all known insects and pests.
ALL our oak beams that undergo our cleaning process are fully treated for wood-worm, dry-rot, wet-rot and death watch beetle.
Even some newer air dried beams that do not currently have any ailments, are treated as a matter of course.
The treatment is clear liquid will a small, not unpleasant odour. This part of the cleaning process is fully dried before both colour and waxing or oiling the beam takes place.
The first requirement a customer usually has about their beam, is its colour.
As we mix our own stains, most colours can be achieved from a natural untreated finish to the dark Jacobean colours found in old reclaimed furniture.

We have a choice of four colours and have tried to show the ones we currently offer. These colours are created from one base colour and it is diluted depending on the final colour needed.
The addition of coloured waxes also enables us to pinpoint colour as required
After all the hard work comes the icing on the cake.
Finishing a beam normally relies on a coloured or clear wax from fiddes
The beam is either wire brushed or left smooth and sanded before the wax is applied. The wax will produce a light sheen and protection layer for a period of time. The wax will eventually diminish and recoating if required.
The procedure is similar to polishing a pair of shoes. The wax is applied with a stiff brush or cloth and allowed to dry to a dull finish. This is then buffed using hand held tools to create the final appearance.
An after care kit is supplied with all finished beams. You are given a small cloth bag containing some wax, clothes and brushes and instructions on how to maintain your oak beam.
Choose any fireplace beam and we will cut, clean, shape and wax your beam to your requirements. If you do not like the end result we will either do you another beam or change the first one until we get the result you want!
