"The entrance to a room, a focal point, a opening statement..."

High quality, bespoke, oak internal doors can be manufactured to match our range of floorboards. We can make any size and ask you questions that will enable us to produce the door for you.

oak doorLedged Only

All doors are either 'Ledged & Braced' or 'Ledged Only'.

A ledged only door is represented by 4 to 6 vertical planks depicting the front of the door and 3 or 4 horizontal planks fixed to the rear holding the planks together.

The boards we use on the back of the door are a substantial 27mm thick ensuring that when your door is made, it will last.

As we are accustomed to talking to clients completing barn conversions and other restoration work, and all our doors are manufactured on a 'made to order basis'.

oak doorLedged and Braced

Similar to the Ledged Only door but this door has 2 additional diagonal braces set between the 3 horizontal planks. Many years ago, these braces were used to stabilise the door and prevent it from sagging.

Today, we use a different method of assembly and these braces are used for aesthetic reasons only.

Although these braces are cosmetic, this will have an impact on whether your oak door is hinged on the left or right, see 'hanging details' below.

double sided oak door

Castle - Double Sided

The double door is our Rolls Royce of our internal oak doors. Manufactured from the same Character Grade Oak', we now construct a made to measure door that looks the same on both sides

The effect is that of a ledged only door except you have the benefit from seeing the face on both sides. This substantial door is 50mm thick and is made using horizontal braces within the construction for stability.

Please note, these doors are very heavy and a heavy duty frame may be required to hang them. Consideration should also be given to the design and strength of any hinges.

Advice and all these matters can be discussed with a member of our helpful sales staff if needed.

The left hand side picture shows a close up of the 20mm core board and 2 outer 15mm boards.

The right hand side picture shows a completed oiled door in our showroom.

Bespoke Sizes

The front boards measure 165mm (6 1/2") wide and we can produce a door up to 914mm (36") wide and a height of up to 2.13m (7 foot).

All your doors are made to measure and this is the responsibility of the joiner or fitter. We offer a full fitting service if required.

Important. Note all linings/frames are suitable for these doors. See Door Linings and Casings.

Most door frames have a rebate already machined into the timber to house the door. This rebate will vary depending on the whether the door pulls towards you or pushes away from you.

Hanging Details

Finally, this section relates to the door will be left or right handed. This only applies to Ledged and Braced doors.

At this point we see customers using make-believe hand and arm movements as they imagine themselves walking through the door.

Imagine the door is closed and the front of the door is facing you (see picture right). Please note, this process is only applicable if you have decided on a ledged and braced door.

The only question you need to ask yourself is. Are the hinges on the left or the right? If the hinges are on the left (as pictured), this denotes a left hung door and visa versa. .

Opening Direction

Again, whilst looking at the front of the door, as pictured, ask yourself the following simple question.

Do I push the door into the room or pull it towards me?

Profile Detail

The details relate to the appearance of the door on the front.

The process is straight forward. Again, pictured left are the two profiles we currently offer.

On the top the standard 'Vee' groove - this applies a small amount of definition between the boards

On the bottom an optional 'Beaded' groove - this provides a little more character and is approximately 20mm wide.

Finishing

All doors are sanded and ready for finishing. There are many ways to finish a door, for example by oil, stain, waxed or lacquer or to a colour of your choice. This is normally done after fitting by yourself or decorator.
